David Exline is the contractor/owner of Three Little Pigs Strawbale Design and Construction.
Dave's background in construction began with a part time job while attending Cal Poly, SLO, majoring in
Education and childhood development. As his family grew and teaching salaries remained at the
Poverty level, Dave's part time job with a growing concrete company began to play a more dominant
role in the future plans of the family. After several years of foundation work, Dave acquiring a California
Contractors license and opened up his construction company. His emphasis for the first several
years was, of course, foundations, but as time passed, Dave became interested in Adobe buildings and restoration of historical Adobes.
As fate has it, Dave happened on a client that was interested in a new home, built of Adobe. Being in
California, the county building department required some internal structural components that were not
Standard in historical buildings Dave was familiar with. The structure soon developed into a 2x2 tubular
Steel framework, with 6" metal "I" Beams above, and this framework was encased by 12"x16"x4" "manufactured" adobe blocks. This first introduction in complete home building appealed to Dave, and he began to modify the designs with Engineers, eventually coming up with Adobe structure designs around a post and beam framework. Passive Solar, Radiant floor heating, Rammed Earth, Earth ships, subterranean frameworks, all became parts of the modified Adobe homes he designed and built.
Many years later, in 1995, a friend mentioned a story about a Straw Bale home. The idea was...
Preposterous...absurd...ridiculous...Silly...funny...well... maybe... INTERESTING. The internet provided some fuel to the fire...A book...The Straw Bale House; Steen, Steen, Bainbridge, & Eisenberg, provided historical data, common sense aspects and some invaluable information. Dave attended a talk and slide show given by David Eisenberg, and the hook was set. He could do this... he should do this.... he would do this, and love doing it. So began Three Little Pigs Construction.
Over the next several years the company built several structures, breaking tradition as he did with
Adobe years before.
The first structure was a Nebraska style Ranch house, the first permitted stand alone residence in the
State of California and second only Nebraska type structure in the state. This project begged the question...
I could do this; I should do this.... I would do this!...many times. What was needed was innovation and the past experience with adobe post and beam led to that innovation.
The background with adobe provided some basic plastering experience, and soon the company purchased a plaster machine with which to plaster their own projects. Word got out, and soon, Three Little Pigs Construction was... "Have Gun, Will Travel"! The company has traveled the state of California, building, consulting, and plastering SB projects for homeowners and contractors alike. Projects range from small wine cellars, to polo barns, to quality homes of all sizes. David builds with a personal interest and is concerned about the quality of his work. Every job is approached as if it was being built for himself, and each project is itself a personal work of art.
Over the last two years, Dave has become increasingly interested in Design concepts, and has scaled back on the extensive traveling of the early years. If you pass by the job site, and you are all welcome, you will probably hear Dave saying to the crew..."...................(?)" (Better come listen for yourself!)
